Year 5 | Nicosia

We undertook a mapping process whereby we could begin to decipher the inaccessible buffer zone in Nicosia through walking its periphery. By marking and drawing the varying edge conditions, visual extents, and barricade compositions, the fluctuating buffer zone could begin to be revealed. During our exploration of the territory we focussed on the buildings that have been specifically affected by the military occupation and we seleceted 10 vessels upon which we then placed a narrative of shifts. The shifts are controlled by a set of armatures that act as a drawing tool to mark out their movements.

In the narrative, the buffer zone begins to be rebuilt as an urban environment and the land is apportioned into segments to allow inhabitants to stake a claim on a plot. The buffer zone can now come back to life with plants and flowers to revive the abondoned ruinous area and this leads the way for the next step of rebuilding.
